Doris Nelson

Doris was the first child of Thelma and Willie (Bill) Smith born on January 15, 1929 in Jefferson, Marion County, Texas.  She attended both elementary and high school in Jefferson at Central.  She graduated from high school in 1946.  Doris joined Valley Plain Methodist Church at an early age.  Valley Plain later became Plain View and later merged with St. Paul United Methodist Church.  
Doris married Thomas Alvin Nelson on July 24, 1950.  To this union two sons were born; Mahlon Thomas and Rodney Keith.  She was married until his death in 1995.
Doris graduated from Prairie A&M University in 1952.  Later that year she was employed by the Marion County School System, which later became the Jefferson ISD.  She worked there for 37 years.  During the Jobs Training and Services that helped teenagers find summer jobs.  She did this for 16 years.
Doris was active in her church serving as secretary/treasurer for 30 years.  She was also active in her community, education, and civic activities.  She had a passion for sewing, playing cards, dominoes, working crossword puzzles and traveling.
She was proceeded in death by her parents Willie (Bill) and Thelma Smith, husband, Thomas Nelson, and son, Mahlon Nelson.
She is survived by a loving son, Rodney Nelson (Beverly); granddaughter, Teresa Warren (Andre); grandson, Kevin Nelson; great-grandsons, Andre “AJ” and Thomas;  sisters, Willie Ruth Louis (John) and Bobbie Allen (Vernon); brother, Reverend Samuel W. Smith (Betty); God-daughters, E. DeLarn Malone, Leander Rene “Little Sister ”Hyder (Guss), ; special cousin, Clarence Williams; devoted friend Melba Stevenson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family members and friends.
Favorite Scripture: Proverbs 3: 5-6    “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not to your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Funeral services for Mrs. Doris Nelson, 93, of Jefferson will be 11:00am Saturday, June 25, 2022 at the Jefferson Junior High School Auditorium under the direction of Lewis & Walker Funeral Home.  The Nelson Family will receive visitors Friday, June 24, 2022 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Lewis & Walker Funeral Home.  

Doris was born January 15, 1929 and transitioned June 18, 2022.  Mrs. Nelson was 93 years old.
