Charles Cummings Obituary

Mrs. Charles Yvonne Anderson Cummings was born on January 25, 1960 to the parentage of Callie Mary (Anderson) Roby and Charlie Anderson. She was preceded in death by both parents as well as a loving stepfather, Henry Roby, who raised her from her youth. At an early age she accepted Christ as her personal Savior under the pastoral leadership of Rev. W. H Holt, pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Jefferson, Texas. She remained a faithful member serving in many capacities over the years, including Church Secretary, Sunday School teacher, Choir President, Church Treasurer, and Vacation Bible School Coordinator. She leaves big shoes to fill for whomever will follow in her footsteps. A community activist, Charles also was a founding member of the Frog Town Reunion Committee.

Charles completed her education in the Jefferson Independent School District graduating from Jefferson High School with the Class of 1978. An active part of class events post-high school, Charles served as the Class Leader coordinating annual class mixers, class reunions, and ensuring there was representation at classmates’ homegoing services. After graduating from Jefferson High School, she attended Wiley College, Marshall, TX, an HBCU higher learning institution, graduating in 1982 with a BS in Nursing Home Administration. She furthered her career paths by obtaining her LVN nursing license from Panola Jr. College. She was employed by Marshall Memorial Hospital for 28 years, recently retiring in October 2018.

She met and married Maurice Mathis and to this union Maurice Emmanuel Mathis was born. Her only child, Charles exemplified what it means to love and support your child. On February 28, 2004 she married Rory Cummings, Sr. The two enjoyed life to the fullest by spending time traveling in the RV and on the motorcycle. visiting their grandchildren and enjoying crawfish festivals.

She leaves to cherish her memory a loving and faithful husband, Rory Cummings, Sr., Marshall, TX; a devoted son, Maurice Mathis, Arlington, TX; grandchildren, Maurice Mathis (Pooh-Pooh) and Mason Mathis, both of Jackson, MS; Maurion Mathis, Arlington, TX; Micah Stickler, Fairbanks, Alaska; Aubrey Cummings, Lubbock, TX; Catie Cummings, Yerington, NV; sisters, Jackie Anderson, Jefferson, TX; Henrietta Roby, Dallas, TX; Rhonda Lyons, McKinney, TX; god-sister, Maggie Clark, Gilmer, TX; Constance Carr, Jefferson, TX and one brother, Patrick Carr, Dallas, TX; son and daughter-in-law, Rory Cummings, Jr. and Jessica Cummings; life-long friends, Betty Martin and Rita Mathis, loving nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

 

Services for Mrs. Charles Yvonne Cummings, 59, of Marshall, Texas will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, December 14, 2019 at Jefferson Community Center. Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery in Linden, Texas. There will be a visitation from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. at Berean Baptist Church on Gray Street in Jefferson, Texas Friday, December 13, 2019.
